And a call out to all those who, like me, banded together to waste literally years of our lives playing the first great MMORPG, driving work mates mad with the tales of our exploits the night before and watching my fellow players out level me... Happy 15th Anniversary Everquest! (I played an 'Iksar' lizard man and insisted on writing all my 'S's' with a rolling hiss- Joy!)

As the in-house graphic artist at THQ, I worked on a video game called Deepak Chopra's Leela... I remember thinking (quietly) at the time it was a stupid idea and as we were all redundant within 6 months I guess I was right... So was this guy who featured it on The Internet's most horrible items. A daily blog  (see the pillow slip above available on Amazon, which would actually make a pretty hilarious 'ironic' gift'). Worth a read for Drew's comments alone!

Check out the latest game by developers Fiasco Studios Peleda: a free-to-play sandbox adventure game based on the animated series by Vishus Productions. I may have a vested interest in this game having designed the user interface, knowing both the series and game creators and most of the developers but... it's a gorgeous, fun and quirky little game! Check it out on the ABC. My kids love it!

Rolemodels: A gorgeous set of very personal game cards sourced from 99 exhibiting artists. A huge variety of styles and all stunning.

An article from Co.Design on Make Art Make Money: Lessons from Jim Henson on Fueling Your Creative Career a book written to debunk the myth that creativity and commerce cannot (or should not) coexist by analysing the career of Jim Henson... I think I'll pick that book up...

Star Wars: 1313

One of the great disappointments of the closure of LucasArts last year was the loss of the video game Starwars: 1313 which in it's closing state of (now defunct) development looked like it was probably going to be pretty awesome.

IGN has a nice article on the game, or what was the game with lot's of gorgeous concept art, movies; including the demo and the revelation that it would actually revolve around Boba Fett! Check it out.

Videogames

Dying Light (Pre Alpha trailer) The Wolf Among Us (The Walking Dead creators do the Fables comic)
Blood Dragon Michael Biehn parodying himself and every awesome 80's action movie ever with an oldschool FPS which does away with all those overly complex COD button combos. A perfect soundtrack homage, SNES cut scenes, and the best tutorial system ever and nothing to do with it's Farcry foundation. This is a breath of fresh air to which I literally laughed out loud playing it!

The Walking Dead: 400 Days

I just realised that I haven't played a video game since The Walking Dead. Nothing has grabbed me (though The Last of Us has got me in its sights) like this did; a game that I think non gamers, non Zombiphiles and non Walking Dead fans could enjoy as much as any diehard. So I was pretty excited to hear the original creators have a new chapter on the way with a very different setup. There is a bit of a nothing trailer around at the moment but the above feature's it along with an interview with the creators.

Podcast: The Fourth pLayer

While 'pushing' one of my favourite things (table top Roleplaying games) on fellow ex-THQ employee, Paul 'Hot Lips' Houlihan, I discovered that he is busy with another one of my favourite things, a fantastic new Podcast!
With 17 episodes so far, The Fourth Player is a genuinely insightful, informative and engaging podcast. Presenting a casual, round table discussion of video games, the crew have a great chemistry, good production values and varied content.
Of particular interest is the fact that each of its members come from varying backgrounds within the industry itself and very different tastes in games and preference for platform; making for lively (and amusing) debate.
More than just a plug, I genuinely recommend the Podcast... I'm trawling through it right now... And I can't get that theme song out of my head!

Video Game Trailers

Video games have changed. We have the AAA titles and we have phone apps and the middle ground (along with its developers) are fading away. But then there's those games which take a great 'little game' idea and marry it to some AAA, beautiful and well executed art direction and make something different all together. I hope the game is as good as this trailer for Deadlight.

This is not an awesome trailer, but it is a clever post modern one... By the folks who brought you one of the best trailers ever (video game, movie or otherwise), this is Mad Riders.
